The main focus of my work is the intuitive apprehension of space
and the relationship between perception and physical presence.
Over the past five years I have worked in a number of mediums, continuously
examining the relationship between sensory experience and the codes
and perceptual habits we use to transform our experiences into knowledge.
My emphasis on objects that actualize this moment of transition has
made me particularly attuned to optical illusion, anomalies and reversals,
and negative space.
Mathematics, physics, and architecture have provided important points
of reference for the development of the central concerns of my artwork.
The writings of [science historian] Alan Lightman on Einstein's theory
of relativity along with architect Peter Eisenman's explorations of
surfaces and spatial volumes full of incongruous details have been
particularly significant inspirations. The philosophical reflections
of Gaston Bachelard have also provided a powerful influence on my
thinking about space and its relationship to memory and imagination.
Two practices characterize my explorations of the relationship between
the visible and the invisible: shadow painting, and flat space sculptures.
The first involves using pigment, soot, floor wax etc. to take an
impression of light at a specific moment in time. In addition to responding
to the specific qualities of the site, these projects make a comment
on the singularity of each perceptual event.
Sculpturally my work is based on an exploration of surface as it
relates to shapes or forms. The frontal preoccupation of my sculptural
work is a response to our culture's preoccupation with the aestheticism
of surfaces and the display of objects. The sculptures hold a similar
relationship to architecture’s own emphasis on the decorative
facade.
The use of 2 dimensional materials to create 3 dimensional objects
highlights the role of human imagination in the construction of the
complex world we inhabit while the object's relationship to the realm
of the everyday underscore the miraculous quality inherent within
some of our most banal experiences.
